In the small epistle of II John 1-6 we read, "The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth; (2) For the truth’s sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever. (3) Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. (4) I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father. (5) And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. (6) And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it." As you read these verses you should have noticed three key words.
There is the word "TRUTH" used 5 times in verses 1, 2, 3, and 4.
There is the word "LOVE" used 3 times, in verses 1, 3, and 5.
There is the word "WALKING" in verse 4 and the word "WALK" used in verse 6.
Someone said, "We must not only learn the truth with our minds, but we must also love the truth in our hearts and live the truth by our walk." How important is it for parents to teach their children to love the truth? It is extremely important. If John was writing about you and your family, could it be said of you, "I rejoice greatly that I found thy children and thy grandchildren walking in truth."
When all is said and done, what is said should reflect what has been done! Often the talk we talk on Sunday is not the walk we walk on Monday. For example:
We talk about Christian attitudes but then erupt with anger the first time something does not go our way.
We talk about our love for the Saviour, but we cannot find a way to show love for both saints and sinners.
We talk about soul winning, but we cannot get around to it.
We talk about what the Bible teaches, but then we forget to follow it.
We talk about doing right, but we decide to bend the rules when it suits us to do so.
Remember the teaching of I John 3:18, "My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth." Talking the talk is always right to do! If we do not talk about the right things, then we sure enough are going to see slippage. Walking the walk gives legitimacy to our talking the talk. Taking our talk along with us wherever we walk makes the day to day Christian experience genuine and life changing.
Truth is, the "said" and the "done," ought to be second nature to us, just like a good friend, a buddy, a pal. Since we are the only Bible many people will ever read, it is imperative that the TRUTH that we believe and talk about should be constantly expressed in our everyday walk. We have much with which we are entrusted. Being truthful and faithful is a reasonable expectation. For in I Corinthians 4:2 we read, "Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful."
