In Matthew 24:37-42 we read, “And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not: (22) For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. (23) But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things. (24) But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, (25) And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. (26) And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. (27) And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven. (28) Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near: (29) So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors. (30) Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done. (31) Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. (32) But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. (33) Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.” The turmoil among the Arab states in the Middle East is a reminder that the nation of Israel and its neighbors dominate the agenda of history. We don't know the reverberations of every conflict or the consequences of every shift of power. It may be that the youth movements among Arab states will provide new openness for the Gospel. On the other hand, the shifting political structures may lead to increased radicalism, setting the stage for the Antichrist.

It's not wise to be overly dogmatic as we try to interpret current events, and we've got to be careful about false prophets who claim they are either Christ or Antichrist. The twists and turns of history are under God's providential control, and it's best to watch prayerfully so we can take
advantage of open doors for evangelism while awaiting our Lord's return.

We can't be dogmatic about specific events in the headlines, but we can be fully assured that history is His-story, and that the stage is being set for His soon return. We can live every day with confidence and excitement that no matter how disturbing the news reports, our sovereign Lord is in control.

Jesus warned of famines, pestilences, and earthquakes as we grow closer to His return. We see all these things today and marvel at the disasters that are increasing as time draws shorter. But we shouldn't fear. We should take these things as reminders to be watching, waiting, and praying. We should be ready!

The English Reformer John Bradford is reported to have said while imprisoned in the Tower of London, watching a prisoner being led away to his execution, “There, but for the grace of God, go I.” Can the grace of God help you and me regardless of the size or impact of our sin? Gratefully and biblically, the answer is a resounding, YES!

If anyone was aware of how the grace of God impacts our past, it was John Newton, the infamous slave trader who was gloriously converted to Christ. We know the words to the hymn he wrote, ''Amazing Grace." The title says it all, doesn't it? But you may not be familiar with these words he also wrote, echoing the apostle Paul's theme in I Corinthians 15:10, "I am not what I might be, I am not what I ought to be, I am not what I wish to be, I am not what I hope to be; but I thank God I am not what I once was, and I can say with the great apostle, 'By the grace of God I am what I am."

Paul had written to the church at Corinth, “But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.” Paul meant that the grace of God completely changed Saul of Tarsus from a murderous, religious militant to a humble servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace forgave Paul for being the self-professed chief of sinners (1 Timothy 1:15), a murderer of Christians, and gave him new opportunities as momentous as his offenses had been monstrous.

It is no wonder that Paul eventually wrote to the Roman church in Romans 5:20b-21, “…But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: (21) That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.” In other words, it is impossible to commit sins that are greater than God's grace. It was obviously this verse from Romans that inspired Julia H. Johnston when she wrote her hymn, "Grace Greater than All Our Sin." Some of the words are,

"Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt.
Grace, grace, God's grace, grace that will pardon and cleanse within.

Grace, grace, God's grace, grace that is greater than all our sin!"

The problem with moving forward in life is that the past can't be changed. Even if we know we are forgiven by God and by others, it's hard to forget when we have failed. And that's where the God of grace makes moving forward possible. In fact, the harder we try to forget our sins, the more ingrained in our memory they become. But did you know that God forgets about our sins and failures? That's why it's possible for us to move forward – to move beyond the past, because God treats us as if we had never sinned at all.

I want to list some ways that God's grace is manifested when it comes to the mistakes of our past. Please note the kind of language the writers of the Bible used. It was anthropomorphic language. That means they used words that implied human attributes and behavior by God. They pictured God using human characteristics to do with our sin what we are unable to do with it ourselves:

He removes sin far, far away from us (Psalm 103:11-12).

He blots out our sins; He covers them as with a cloud (Isaiah 44:22).
He casts our sins into the depths of the sea (Micah 7: 19).

He throws our sins behind His back so they are invisible to Him (Isaiah 38:17).

God doesn't have a back, but we do. The depths of the sea are immediately present to God, but it's a long way away from us. I don't know if God can put things out of His memory, but I know I wish I could – and I'm glad God treats my sin as if it is totally forgotten. The words and images of the writers make it abundantly clear: The past is over when it comes to God's grace and forgiveness of our sin. Grace is when God gives us something we don't deserve – forgiveness, a fresh start, a clean slate, and renewed hope. But forgiveness also involves mercy – not giving us what we do deserve which would be judgment, wrath, and no more opportunity. God’s grace and mercy are indeed greater than all our sin. Remember God’s grace buries your past and opens the door to a future of hope and blessing – if you will receive His grace in your life today.

In Acts 1:8 just before Jesus went back to Heaven, He said to His disciples, "But ye shall receive power after the Holy Spirit is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth." For several weeks we have looked at the first church established by Christ in Jerusalem. This was primarily a Jewish Church, led by the Apostle to the Jews, Peter. There we saw from Acts 2:41-48 whatever we do as a church ought to fall within the parameters of 4 objectives. They are WORSHIP, INSTRUCTION, FELLOWSHIP, and EXPRESSION (or evangelism). After establishing the church there in Jerusalem, the next area penetrated by the Gospel was the area of Judea. Then the Gospel moved into the area of Samaria where the second great church at Antioch is mentioned in Acts 11. This is the first Gentile Church and the central evangelistic figure changes from Peter (the Apostle to the Jews) to Paul (the Apostle to the Gentiles).

Again in Acts 11:19 we read "Now they who were scattered abroad upon the persecution…" Who were these scattered? They were believers who had come from Jerusalem because of the persecution. In Acts 8:1, 3 we read, "…And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad…except the apostles.
Scattered by tribulation, they traveled throughout, talking about the Word of God, telling others of the wonderful, good news of the gospel. You know,

margin-left:.2in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:justify;text-autospace:none">There were at least 16 locations known as Antioch in the ancient world, but this one was the greatest. This "Antioch" was the third greatest city in the world in the days of the early church. Rome was considered first, then Alexandria, then Antioch. It was a wealthy city, but it was also a wicked city.

One Bible historian has said, "If any city in the first century was worthy to be called the heathen queen of the east, that city was Antioch." It was in this city that the Gospel was preached so effectively that many received the gospel and were born-again. Here in our text I want to call your attention to 5 ingredients of "that great church at Antioch."

First: Antioch was a PREACHING Church: There was an emphasis upon preaching.

In Acts 11:19 we read they were "preaching the Word."

In Acts 11:20 we read they were “preaching the Lord Jesus."

In Acts 14:25 we read, "And when they had preached the word…"

God put a great deal of emphasis upon PREACHING. The emphasis at Antioch was on preaching the Word. In order to have a great Bible-believing church, it must first be a preaching church.

In Mark 16:15 Jesus said, "Go ye into all the world and PREACH the gospel to every creature."

Today the word Christian is a very loosely used word. Many people who have never been born again consider themselves "Christians" simply because they say they are not "pagans." After all, they may belong to a church, attend services somewhat regularly, and even occasionally give to the work of the church! But it takes more than that for a sinner to become a child of God. It takes faith in Jesus Christ. Actually the word “Christian” is mentioned only three times in the entire Bible.
