It is well noted in the Word of God that hope and cheer are essential to victory in life. Even in the secular world, there is recognition of the importance of having a positive outlook on life. Of course, we are the children of God and have eternal reasons to have a positive outlook on life. Today, I want to encourage you in this matter.

In John 16:33 Jesus said to His disciples “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” Jesus tells His disciples that though they will face persecution and tribulation, they should be of good cheer. Actually, there are three times that Jesus tells us to be of good cheer.

Number 1: Your Sins Are Forgiven! In Matthew 9:2 we read, "And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy. lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.” What a reason to rejoice and be of good cheer! No matter what happens in our lives today, no matter what burdens we carry or what sadness we face – our sins are forgiven! Heaven is our home! Jesus is our Saviour! Nothing can change the fact that our sins are forgiven. We are saved and sealed and secured.

Find someone this week you can encourage to be of good cheer – even in difficult home life situations. Encourage them to be of good cheer because their sins are forgiven.

Number 2Jesus Is Always With Us!  In Matthew 14:22-27 we read, “And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. (23) And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. (24) But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. (25) And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. (26) And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. (27) But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.” Here we find the disciples in a difficult situation. They are in a storm, and the wind is contrary to them. Yet, even in the storms of life, Jesus tells His disciples to be of good cheer! Wow! Isn't this amazing? Even in the storms of life, He says, "Be of good cheer."

No doubt, many who are reading this are now in a storm of life. You face a sickness, or a tragedy has come your way. Dear friend, you will find that good cheer will be medicine to your soul! Let your heart be cheerful today.

Number 3: We Are On the Winning Side! In John 16:33 we read, "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”In these words, Jesus tells us that there will be difficulties to face, battles to fight, persecutions to overcome, but He tells us to be of good cheer, because He has overcome the world! Hey, dear friend, we are on the winning side. This week sing H. Reeves song:

Well, I am on the winning side; Yes, I am on the winning side.
Out in sin no more will I abide.
I've enlisted in the fight
For the cause of truth and right.
Praise the Lord, I'm on the winning side.

May God’s blessing be upon you this week as you read and meditate on the 18th  message from the Book of James 4:6-10 “Grace to the Humble – Part 1”

In His Amazing Grace,
Pastor David Miklas
