Here is a statement to think about. It's not a disgrace to become DISCOURAGED, it's a disgrace to stay there. Now the word DISCOURAGE means "TO MELT" as in "I am melting under the circumstances." It also means "to be cast down." There are a number of reasons why one will get DISCOURAGED or start to melt under the circumstances. Let me give you 6 categories you may fall into sooner or later.

(1) Discouragement sets in when a big decision must be made and you worry over the details.

(2) Discouragement often comes after some big victory, or a big event.

(3) Discouragement comes after you have had one day after another, or one situation after another where nothing has gone right, and you throw up your hands saying, "I have had it."

(4) Discouragement sets in when you are serving the Lord and putting forth a good effort, but you are doing it in the energy of the human flesh.

(5) Discouragement sets in when it seems you are getting the rotten end of the deal, and you guessed it, someone else seems to be getting all the Glory.

David in Psalms 37:3-5 gives us four powerful yet refreshing steps to overcoming DISCOURAGEMENT. “Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. (4) Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. (5) Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. (6) And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. (7) Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.”

First: Verse 3 – "Trust in the Lord." Notice he said trust "IN" the Lord. Faith is resting upon the promises of God who will not fail you, who will not forsake you, who will bring it to pass. Let God be God in every area of your life. That is in both the SACRED as well as the SECULAR. Let Him be the Lord of ALL your life. Keep your eyes upon the Lord.

Second: Verse 4 – "Delight in the Lord." I believe this refers to our DELIGHT in the WORD of GOD. Unless you are in the Word of God you will never rise above the circumstances of life. A DISCOURAGED person will COMPLAIN. But a HAPPY person will REJOICE. David said in Psalm 23:4, "Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, thou art with me." It is not WHAT you are going through, rather it is WHO is going through it with you that counts.

Third: Verse 5 – "Commit thy way unto the Lord." A Discouraged person is trying to work out his own plans. Praise God, aren't you glad you cannot see your way through? If you could, you would not give God a chance to show you HOW STRONG HE REALLY IS. Remember this:

My Lord knows the way through the wilderness, All I have to do is follow.

Strength for today is mine all the way, and all that I need for tomorrow.

My Lord knows the way through the wilderness; all I have to do is follow.

Fourth: Verse 7 – "Rest in the Lord." Literally we are to be silent before the Lord. Sometimes we need to just STOP, SIT BACK and be SILENT before the Lord.

Trust, Delight, Commit, Rest, is the four-fold formula against DISCOURAGEMENT. Times of discouragement will come, if not today they will tomorrow. But here in Isaiah 41:10 we read, "Fear thou not; be not dismayed; for I am thy God. I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."
