Even if you've never been the type to pray consistently, being the parent of a teenager will take you there! The challenges and risks surrounding your children at this age are great, and the help of a loving Heavenly Father can calm anxious parents and guide adolescents. Below are the second set of FIVE specific ways you can pray for your teen.

6. Pray for safety. If you've never prayed this one before, it's because your teen hasn't passed his driver's test yet. During these years when you have to let them experience life occasionally without your supervision, fear can be a parent's constant companion. Pray that God will protect your child, and calm your heart. Here remember, Psalm 4:8; "I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”

7. Pray for their humility. If your child can learn to put others before himself and to see each person as a unique and valuable individual, he will learn humility. In Proverbs 22:4; we read, “By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.”

8. Pray for contentment. Adolescence is often characterized by restlessness and a desire for gratification of some sort. Pray that your child will learn to be content with what God has provided for today, and that she or he won't use discontentment as a springboard into bad decisions. Wise people have the ability to endure and wait on God, even when things aren't perfect (i.e. waiting for Mr. Right, the perfect job, etc.). In Philippians 4:11-12; we read, “Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. (12) I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: everywhere and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.”

9. Pray for their marriage. While it may seem a bit premature, it's never too early to pray for God to bring the right spouse for your child one day. Pray that the husband or wife that God has for your child is growing in wisdom and faith until they are together in a marriage built on mutual values.

10. Pray for their future. Your teenager is amazingly close to a series of important decisions: which college, which major, where to live, etc. Choosing wisely and following through with hard work during young adulthood will have a major impact on their future success and opportunities. Pray that they will listen to God's guidance and make good choices today, so they can enjoy the fruit of those decisions tomorrow. Remind them of Jeremiah 29:11-13; “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. (12) Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. (13) And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”

One of the best ways to practice Christlikeness is to start each day saying, “Who can I serve today? To whom can I minister?” Remember that Jesus Christ never ministered to a perfect person, for He was the only one of this in sight. He came to serve imperfect people like us, and He bids us do the same. The humble man feels no jealousy or envy. He can praise God when others are preferred and blessed before Him.
